概要

セッション①Pronunciation for Guides Part 1 (Individual Sounds)      7月1日 13:30~15:30

Expanding on her session in May, Amy will examine several English language pronunciation difficulties that can interfere with comprehension for Japanese guides, focusing on individual vowels and consonants. For example, do you say beet or bit? Very or berry? Sea or she?  This class will contain plenty of pairwork, as well as opportunities to practice saying the target sounds in the context of guiding commentary.

セッション②Pronunciation for Guides Part 2 (Word and Sentence Stress/Rhythm)

7月2日 10:00~12:00

Continuing from the July 1st session on pronunciation of individual English sounds, this workshop will focus on stress and intonation at both the word and sentence level. Learn why the correct rhythm of English is so important in reducing “listener fatigue”, and practice some new pronunciation techniques in a supportive, friendly environment.

セッション③Japanese Cultural Values 2.0 7月2日 13:30~15:30

Building on the concepts presented in Amy’s May workshop, this practical session will first review some key Japanese values that Western guests find fascinating, and examine how and why they differ from Western culture. Then, each participant will have the chance to deliver a mini-commentary to the group. Everyone will gain practical experience in pointing out how these key values are revealed in everyday behavior, services and products. We will also practice answering cultural questions from guests, and we’ll use phrases that help us clarify the question, give us time to think, and connect the question to larger cultural issues.

セッション④Japanese Cuisine 2.0 7月3日 10:00~12:00

Building on the food-related concepts presented in Amy’s May workshop, this practical session will start by reviewing what we can say about Japanese food that is unique and surprising to Western guests. Then, each participant will have the chance to deliver a mini-commentary to the group about one aspect of Japanese food, while explaining what it reveals about Japanese culture. We will also practice answering food-related questions from guests, and we’ll use phrases that help us clarify the question, give us time to think, and connect the question to larger issues about food and its meaning.

講師紹介

Amy Loewen先生

She lived in Kanazawa for two years, and now works as a lecturer and Japan culture specialist for both Silversea Cruises and Zegrahm Expeditions. She also teaches English language at City College of San Francisco, and every summer she returns to Japan as a visiting faculty member at the International University of Japan (国際大学). In addition to her lecturing and teaching, she recently started creating and leading her own small group tours of Japan.

Her extensive experience working on cruises all over Japan has made her into a cultural liaison between guests and guides. She has developed a unique perspective into what English-speaking guests really want to know about Japan, but she also brings an understanding of the challenges that Japanese guides face. Her sessions are aimed at helping Japanese guides deliver their content to English-speaking guests in relevant and refreshing ways, so that both guides and guests may have a rewarding experience.
